Number 1 Song... With The Best First Line...Of all the songs in the world the one with the greatest opening line is..."Werewolves of London," a minor hit in 1978 for the late singer-songwriter Warren Zevon. That's the word from a BBC Radio 2 poll of 10,000 listeners that sought to identify rock music's best first liner. So here it is, the first great line of "Werewolves of London": "I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand...Walking through the streets of Soho in the rain...He was looking for the place called Lee Ho Fook's...Going to get a big dish of beef chow mein." Why did this one win? "Once you've heard the first line of Werewolves Of London you'll never forget it," disk jockey Jeremy Vine told Britain's Sky News. The two runners-up for the honor of greatest first song lines, according to the BBC Radio 2:2. "One, two, three o'clock, four o'clock rock" from "Rock Around The Clock" by Bill Haley and The Comets Warren Zevon's son Jordan accepted the award from the BBC, admitting the subject matter may have been fueled by "a little too much vodka."
